Conversations with History and Heroes

ICT Lead: David Traum

We have developed methods for having an audio-visual conversation with someone who is not there at the same time (sometimes called “Time-offset interaction”). We have created systems, which we call PersonAIges, that people can interact with and see and hear real recordings of interesting people. The systems can be an effective means of learning history, almost as good as talking to an actual participant in historical events, but without the bandwidth requirements on that participant. Early work, in collaboration with the USC Shoah Foundation and ICT’s Vision and Graphics Lab focussed on Holocaust Survivors. We have also recorded Army heroes and sexual assaut survivors, Astronauts, Doctors, and Business leaders.
